Katrien De Blauwer made this untitled collage from cut and pasted paper. Her work often evokes the fragmented nature of memory. De Blauwer, born in 1969, is a self-taught artist who came of age in a world saturated with images, yet she consciously works against the rapid consumption of digital media. By using found photographs and printed materials, she recontextualizes images stripped from their original narratives. Here, De Blauwer hints at the traditional theme of women in nature, yet she develops a modern and mysterious narrative. The woman’s face, cropped and looking upward, is juxtaposed against the image of another figure lying in a field. De Blauwer has said, "It's about creating a certain mood... I want to evoke a feeling in the viewer." The artist subtly manipulates our emotional responses. The collage becomes a powerful meditation on desire, memory, and the female gaze.
