Curatorial notes
This sketch of a man with a walking stick in a hilly landscape was made by Andreas Schelfhout, using graphite on paper. The drawing's success lies in Schelfhout's skillful use of graphite to convey light and shadow. Notice how the varying pressure of the graphite creates a range of tones, giving the landscape depth and texture. The lines are economic, but descriptive, and beautifully capture the scene's essence. Schelfhout's work is associated with the Dutch Romantic movement, which placed emphasis on emotion and individualism. But we can also read the work as reflecting on the social context of the time: the figure with his walking stick is a kind of witness, registering the landscape around him. This drawing is a reminder that art can be found in the simplest of materials, and that even a quick sketch can capture the spirit of a time and place.
