This is Terry Frost's "Orchard Tambourine B Complete Portfolio," and you can see how he’s laid out a grid of colored squares, each with these concentric circles. I can imagine Frost in his studio, going at it, one after another, each square a contained burst of color and rhythm. You know, making paintings is a bit like having a conversation with yourself—each color choice, each brushstroke, answering something that came before. Look at that pink square, next to the green one; he must have been thinking about warmth and coolness, seeing how they vibrate against each other. Then you jump over to the orange and blue one, and it’s like he’s riffing on the same idea but with a different beat. Artists are always in dialogue, taking cues from each other across time. Like, Frost’s circles remind me a bit of Noland's targets. You can see a line from one to the other even though they did their work at different times. It's a constant back and forth. And in the end, each painting is an invitation to join the conversation.
