This squash blossom necklace, made by an anonymous artist, is a powerful example of how art can be both beautiful and meaningful. The artist has meticulously placed each tiny bead and carefully shaped each blossom, and it’s clear that the making of this piece was a deeply considered process. What strikes me most is the materiality of the piece. The cool smoothness of the beads contrast with the almost playful arrangement of the squash blossom shapes that gives the work a tactile quality. I am drawn to the small crescent pendant. Its curved form echoes the larger shapes of the blossoms, creating a sense of harmony. Looking at this piece makes me think of Hilma af Klint, who like this artist, was interested in the spiritual aspects of form and color. The necklace is a reminder that art can be a way of connecting with something larger than ourselves, and that beauty can be found in the smallest of details.
