This is 'Staal bedrukte trijp met streeppatroon in zwart op rood fond' by Leo Schellens & Co, a length of fabric with a pattern of black stripes on a red ground. The horizontal lines create a rhythm across the surface, but it’s the texture that really grabs me, those zigzagging lines have a wonderful quality. It reminds me of my own process with painting. This fabric is a document of its own making, a trace of the hand. I’m fascinated by the contrast between the bold, graphic stripes and the more intricate, slightly irregular patterns within them. It makes me think about the relationship between order and chaos, control and spontaneity. This piece speaks to the endless possibilities of pattern and repetition, and the way that small variations can create something truly unique. It reminds me of the work of Agnes Martin, or even the quilts of Gee’s Bend, in the way that it finds beauty and depth in simple forms. Art's a conversation, after all!
