These two Ketohs, made by a Navajo (Diné) artist, are incredible examples of Native American craftsmanship. I see in them a deep connection to the natural world. The first one is bursting with color and texture: Turquoise stones, like captured pools of the sky, are embedded in the silver. I imagine the artist carefully setting each stone, feeling its weight and shape. There are radiating lines around the central stone, it’s like a sunburst! And the shapes of the other stones, arranged like a geometric pattern, like a landscape seen from above. The second Ketoh is more restrained, but equally beautiful. The silver framework feels sturdy and protective and the stones look smooth and cool. The craftsmanship speaks of a deep understanding of materials and a reverence for the land, for nature’s bounty. It reminds me that art isn't just about personal expression, but also about cultural heritage, and a sense of belonging to a community.
