This engraving, made by Joannes van Doetechum around 1600 in the Netherlands, depicts a section of a procession, showcasing a range of figures on foot and horseback. These processions were powerful displays of social hierarchy and political authority. Here, the image's composition and visual codes tell us much about the era's social and institutional structures. Note the careful depiction of attire, gestures, and emblems that are all carefully calibrated to signal status and allegiance. The inclusion of heraldic banners representing different regions also highlights the importance of regional identities within the larger political landscape.
