This is "Deel van de optocht, nr. 11," an engraving made around 1600 by Joannes van (I) Doetechum. Look closely at how the composition is structured, with the figures arranged in a horizontal line across the frame. The artist uses linear perspective, although it's not entirely consistent, to create a sense of depth and organization within the scene. The figures are distinguished through contrasting clothing and adornments that reflect their status, yet notice how they are positioned in relation to each other to invite interpretation of social hierarchy. The horse is central to the print, its positioning and the rider on its back suggesting power and authority. Consider how the print uses the semiotic system of heraldry, with the lion rampant on the banner and horse's coverings, to communicate complex ideas of ancestry and allegiance. The formal elements such as line, space and form are meticulously rendered which speaks to the print's function as not just an aesthetic object but as a visual document.
