This Italianate landscape with a rotunda church was created by Roelant Roghman using pen, brush, and gray ink, with gray wash. The drawing shows the architectural forms using a limited tonal range, which gives the overall scene an ethereal quality. Roghman would have begun with a light sketch, establishing the main contours of the composition. He then methodically built up the image using hatching and cross-hatching to model the forms and create tonal depth, seen in the mountain looming in the background. The gray wash delicately softens the architectural volumes, and adds atmosphere. Look at the foreground figures and animals, all captured with an economy of line, suggesting their lively presence and interaction. They are not generic but specific, individualized by the artist's keen observation of everyday life. Roghman’s skilled handling of such modest materials—pen, ink, and paper—elevates this landscape study, making it more than just a preparatory sketch, but a work of art in its own right.
