Jim Goldberg made this photograph, "I Miss You," using mixed media collage. The image combines an old photograph, a handwritten envelope and a paperclip. The photo depicts a mother and daughter. It is a simple snapshot, its composition casual and its colors faded by time. The envelope above, addressed with the words “I Miss You”, brings a sense of longing and personal history. Goldberg makes the viewer aware of time passing. You can almost feel the texture of the aged paper, and the cool, smooth metal of the clip. The beauty of this piece lies in its simplicity, its emotional resonance, and how Goldberg has composed the elements. I am reminded of the collage work of Jess Collins, particularly in the way that Goldberg elevates found materials into something meaningful and new. Just goes to show, artmaking is an ongoing conversation!
