This ornamental letter ‘A’ was made by Lorenzo Lorenzi in the late 1700s using pen and brown ink. The drawing is a great example of the relationship between craftsmanship, design, and materiality. The artist’s skill is evident in the precise linework and delicate shading. It is a testament to Lorenzi’s training that the letterform is rendered with such detail. Look at the acanthus leaves, the little face at the bottom, and the swan whose body completes the shape of the ‘A.’ The work’s material – pen and ink – influences its appearance. The brown ink gives it a sense of warmth and age, while the pen allows for fine lines and intricate details. This was not mass production but a slow build-up by hand, a time-consuming process. The drawing’s significance lies in its function as a decorative element, and shows how graphic design, traditionally seen as a lesser art, has its own aesthetic and history. It challenges the traditional distinctions between fine art and craft by demonstrating the importance of skill and design in both realms.
