This black and white photograph of Hunebed van Kerguntuil, Trégastel was taken by Jan Lanting sometime in the 20th century. The image shows an ancient stone structure; the rocks loom into the frame, creating a feeling of enclosure. I imagine Lanting setting up his equipment and considering the light, trying to capture the rough texture of the stones. What was it like for him standing there, taking in the sheer size and age of this thing? Maybe he thought about the passage of time, the enduring presence of the stones against the ephemerality of human existence. I’m sure he felt a profound sense of connection to history. The monochromatic palette simplifies the scene, intensifying the play of light and shadow. The texture of the stone is highlighted, emphasizing the timelessness of the subject. It’s so cool to see how artists in conversation with the past push each other’s practices forward. Each shot builds on the last.
