Jan Lanting made this photograph of the 'Sluitsteen van het hunebed van Kerguntuil, Trégastel' with what must have been a heavy camera and a lot of patience. I imagine Lanting, trudging through fields, lugging his equipment, getting up close and personal with this neolithic dolmen. What was he thinking as he framed this shot? Was it a purely documentary project, or was he chasing something more? Look how he captures the rough texture of the stone, the play of light and shadow giving it volume. There's something deeply affecting in the way the light falls. He's in conversation with the earth, with time itself. Painters often look to other mediums to see differently, and photography really opened up new ways of seeing and composing. This photograph reminds us that artists are always in dialogue, building upon each other's visions across time.
