Hendrick Goltzius created this small landscape with cottage print sometime around the turn of the 17th century. In this period, landscape prints were not just about pretty scenery; they reflected complex social and economic changes shaking up the Netherlands. Look at the figures. They are small and almost overwhelmed by their surroundings. This reflects a shifting power dynamic where humanity, especially the common person, is increasingly at the mercy of larger economic and environmental forces. The cottage itself, while seemingly idyllic, hints at the hardscrabble existence of rural life. Goltzius wasn't just showing us a place; he was commenting on the changing relationship between people and the land, and the anxieties of a society in transition. The image invites us to consider our own place within the landscape.
