Nicholas Roerich painted this work, Himalayas, capturing the ethereal peaks with tempera on cardboard. The mountains, bathed in radiant yellow, rise as powerful symbols of spiritual aspiration. This symbolic mountain shares kinship with those found in the works of Caspar David Friedrich, where peaks evoke the sublime, and even further back, to sacred mountains in ancient mythologies. In those mountains, the gods reside. Consider how the golden light caressing the peaks can be traced back to the golden halos of Byzantine icons. Like an icon, the mountain’s enduring power lies in its ability to evoke a sense of awe. The visual form of the mountain is eternally reborn, carrying with it layers of cultural memory. Roerich's Himalayas reminds us that symbols are never truly new.
