Curatorial notes

Jan Chalon created this etching, "Old Man at his Desk," in the late 18th century, using an etching needle to draw through a wax ground on a metal plate. It’s a process capable of capturing fine detail and subtle gradations of tone. Look closely, and you’ll see how the density of the etched lines creates areas of shadow and depth. Chalon skillfully uses this technique to convey the weight and texture of the man's clothing, the roughness of his skin, and the solidity of the books and writing implements on the desk. The image is interesting for what it suggests about the social context of printmaking at this time. Was this image made for a patron, or for a wider public? What was the role of skilled labor in the production process, and how did this influence the value and reception of the artwork? These are all questions that we can explore by considering the materials, making, and context of this fascinating image.
