This silver gelatin print is by Norbert van den Berg, who was born at the beginning of the twentieth century. It's a photograph of a lush garden, maybe in Italy. I wonder if it was a happy place for him. I mean, I hope so. I love the way you can see the different textures of the plants. How the plants rise up from below, as if pushed by the Earth. And how they seem to almost touch the sky. There is a fence in the background. Perhaps it's there to keep the wild at bay. Taking pictures can be an attempt to freeze a moment in time. But the thing about gardens is that they're always changing. So what was he trying to capture, do you think? The light? The feeling of the garden? Maybe Norbert van den Berg was trying to make sense of the world, one snapshot at a time.
