Pieter Feddes van Harlingen created this print of Matthew, one of the four evangelists, in the 17th century. During this period, the Dutch Republic was experiencing a Golden Age, marked by economic prosperity and cultural flourishing, especially in art. Here, Matthew is depicted with his traditional attribute, an angel, symbolizing divine inspiration. The landscape in the background with its towers is a look at the world that the text of the Gospel attempts to influence. What is the relationship between faith, power, and the written word? Note how Matthew is holding a pen and inkwell, ready to write, his gaze seems to be focused inward. This rendering emphasizes the importance of the individual's interpretation and relationship with the divine. The print invites us to reflect on the personal and societal impact of religious texts, as well as the complex interplay between faith, knowledge, and artistic expression.
