This newspaper clipping, from the archive of Philip Zilcken, is… well, it's a newspaper clipping! We don't know who made it. So, really, it’s an anonymous act of preservation. Look at the texture; it's not just paper, it's time itself, isn't it? You can almost smell the ink and feel the weight of history in the way the paper has aged, yellowed. And that ragged edge? It suggests a rip, a tear, a violence done to information, or maybe just casual neglect. I’m interested in how the smallest mark can become so poignant. It reminds me of Kurt Schwitters, how he turned trash into treasure with his Merz collages, elevating the mundane to the monumental. It's all about how we see, what we choose to save, and what stories we tell ourselves about the past. I love how art can embrace ambiguity, inviting us to find meaning where we least expect it.
