Editor: Here we have Paul Feeley's "Untitled (February 26)" from 1964, created using acrylic paint. It has these almost playful, orangey-red shapes against a creamy background. They remind me of oddly cheerful heraldic emblems. What strikes you when you look at this, like beyond the surface? Curator: It's interesting that you see heraldry because, for me, Feeley's abstraction feels so personal. These shapes aren't just geometric, they have an organic quality, as if he captured a fleeting emotion. They remind me of celestial bodies or perhaps even something more primal, cellular division perhaps. Do you think the title gives any insight? "February 26"...what could that signify? Editor: Maybe a specific moment? Though it’s vague enough to keep it mysterious, right? It does make me wonder what he was feeling that day. I guess with Abstract Expressionism, you always wonder if there's a hidden emotional code to unlock. Curator: Precisely! And it's that ambiguity that I find so compelling. We project ourselves onto the canvas. The rhythm, the space between the forms – do they evoke something different for you now? Does the simplicity itself have something to say? I almost want to paint that color… or eat it with focaccia… yum. Editor: I do like that you see it almost as emotional, and it encourages a personal interaction to be meaningful even with abstract painting. That definitely changed my perspective. Curator: That is just it! Ultimately, all that matters is the journey your imagination takes and if your thoughts have taken you further.
