Curatorial notes
Soledad Sevilla made this untitled painting with a simple geometric design, exploring the push and pull of colour. The surface has a warm glow, thanks to the limited palette of reds and oranges. Sevilla’s application of the paint is quite thin, almost translucent in places, and you can see a history of layers. The darker hues form a network of geometric forms, mostly circular or rectilinear, that gives the piece a rhythmic, almost musical quality. Looking at the top right section, you can see the build up of the red paint against a sharper, more delineated shape. There’s something hypnotic about the repetition, reminiscent of Agnes Martin’s grids, or even the pattern-based works of someone like Yayoi Kusama, but with a calmer, more grounded feel. Sevilla’s embrace of ambiguity invites us to find our own connections and meanings within the work.
