This photograph was taken in August 1927 during a holiday in Switzerland. What strikes me about this image is the contrast between the crisp details of the foreground and the haziness of the background. It's like the photographer was really interested in the textures of the snow. The monochromatic palette creates a sense of serenity, almost like a dream. If you look closely at the foreground, you can see the footprints in the snow, each one a small record of movement, which gives the picture a real sense of depth. This is the part of the image that holds my attention. The photographer seems interested in making sense of the world through movement, which is a way of learning, of processing the landscape. There is something of the landscapes of Caspar David Friedrich in this image, a concern with the sublime, and the figure in nature. It is a reminder that photography, like any art form, is about exploring and celebrating the world around us, and the ongoing conversation between us.
