This photograph, mounted in an album page, shows Else Wachenheimer-Moos on the Rocher de Naye, during a vacation in Switzerland in August 1927. I love the intimate scale of the artwork, the way the photograph has been meticulously mounted onto the cardboard. The snowy landscape feels as though it has swallowed the pair whole. The scene is balanced by the strong diagonal of the rooftop and the gentle, almost hesitant trail of footprints in the snow. It is a simple, pared back composition. I can imagine the photographer taking his time, wanting to record the memory just so. The image conveys a sense of tranquility, a quiet observation of time standing still. I think that it shares something with the work of other artists from that period, a focus on capturing everyday life. It shows how the impulse to make a painting or photograph is timeless. Each work exists in dialogue.
