This is a Radio van Philips, made of wood, glass, and metal. I like to imagine all the hands that went into making this thing. The radio’s cabinet has a warmth to it, like a familiar piece of furniture from a bygone era. The curves and the wood grain make me think of a painter building up layers, one after the other. Each layer contributes to the whole, just like an artist adds brushstrokes, each one shaping the final image. The grill cloth feels like it could be painted in gold leaf. I wonder what it would have been like to work on it, with all its different materials and parts. How did the craftspeople balance function and form? So much to consider! Artists are constantly taking inspiration from each other across time and media. Every gesture, every decision leaves its mark, and like a radio wave, it keeps echoing.
