Luciano Bartolini created “Spazi interiori” with mixed media on canvas, using gold leaf, among other materials. The immediate impression is one of stark contrast and textured layering. A horizontal band crosses the canvas, adorned with gold leaf that catches the eye. Above and below, we see a field of white, marked by scattered lines, suggesting depth and space. This work destabilizes conventional notions of painting. The collage-like application of the horizontal band disrupts the picture plane, challenging traditional perspective. Bartolini introduces a semiotic interplay between the textured, almost tactile gold leaf and the flatness of the painted surface. The linear elements, seemingly random, may be interpreted as signs pointing to an interior world, a space of thought and feeling. The painting challenges the viewer to consider how different materials and gestures can come together to create a cohesive statement. It operates within a discourse of minimalist aesthetics while pushing against its boundaries through the use of texture and symbolic elements. This prompts us to re-evaluate the relationship between form and content.
