Niels Larsen Stevns made this study of a seated figure with pencil on paper, and for me, it's all about the making. Look at the layers and scribbled lines, you can almost feel the artist circling the subject, trying to capture the essence of the pose. The texture of the paper peeks through the graphite, creating a sense of lightness, as if the figure could float off the page any minute. Notice the way the lines vary in weight and direction, how they build up to suggest form and shadow. It's like a dance of mark-making, a conversation between the artist and the subject. I especially like the shading on the top left; it's more forceful, and in contrast to the light scribbles around the figure. This feels like a work by someone in conversation with artists like Kathe Kollwitz, with its intimate and immediate feel, capturing the human form in all its vulnerability and complexity. In the end, it's the ambiguity and openness of the drawing that makes it so compelling; it invites us to fill in the blanks, to participate in the act of creation.
