Curatorial notes

This drawing, Naaisters aan het werk, was made by Isaac Israels. It's a collection of light touches, a flurry of lines that suggest rather than define. You can almost see the artist's hand moving quickly, trying to capture the fleeting moment of these seamstresses at work. Look at the way Israels uses line weight, thick and thin, to create depth and shadow, there’s a real sense of movement and energy, which is quite extraordinary. Notice too, the open, airy quality of the drawing, which invites us to fill in the gaps. It’s like we’re being asked to collaborate with the artist, to use our own imagination to complete the scene. It's a reminder that art isn't just about what's on the paper, it's about the conversation that happens between the artwork and the viewer. Think Degas, think Toulouse Lautrec, but with an intimacy all his own.
