Here, Claude Rutault presents us with an arrangement of canvases, each bearing a unique presence. The geometric forms and the bare canvas recall the modernist preoccupation with the fundamental elements of painting, yet these shapes also echo ancient architectural forms. Consider the circle, here reduced to a flat disc, that calls to mind the sun—an ancient symbol of vitality and enlightenment. Throughout history, this simple shape has transcended cultures, appearing in religious iconography as halos, mandalas, and solar deities. The square, with its rigid lines and stable structure, symbolizes order and foundation, a principle that dates back to the earliest forms of human construction. Yet here, these age-old symbols are stripped of their traditional associations. They challenge us to re-examine our subconscious response to these symbols. We are confronted with the essence of form, inviting us to ponder the primal connection between geometric shapes and the human psyche. The artwork becomes a stage, where the drama of form and color unfolds, inviting an emotional experience rooted in the collective memory of humanity. This is a testament to the non-linear progression of cultural symbols.
