Kazimir Malevich made this print, "Soon, soon we will in Krakow", using simplified shapes and bold colors. You can really see the artist's hand in the outlined forms and flat application of pigment. It’s so different from traditional painting techniques that aim to disappear the artist’s process. The combination of the figures with their stiff spears behind the barrier, and the bold horseman looking to them creates a strange kind of tension in the work. The horseman is wearing bright red, with blue breeches and black boots. The white horse is delicately illustrated with the use of fine lines, but the bold colors used throughout really brings your eye to the subject. It’s a simple, but effective, composition. This image reminds me of some of Stuart Davis’s work with its bold lines and the use of simplified forms to construct a strong, graphic image. Malevich shows us that art isn't about imitation, it's about invention.
