Kazimir Malevich

Kazimir Malevich (1879-1935) was a Ukrainian-Russian painter and art theorist who is considered one of the pioneers of abstract art. Malevich is best known for his invention of Suprematism, an art movement that sought to express pure artistic form and feeling through geometric shapes, especially the square and the circle. His iconic work, "Black Square" (1915), is seen as a radical departure from traditional representational art. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, Malevich also produced a series of designs for clothing and objects, which embraced the geometric shapes and colors of his Suprematist paintings. Malevich’s work has been influential on many subsequent generations of artists, inspiring a continued interest in abstraction and pure form.
