Curatorial notes

Isaac Israels created this transfer of a chalk drawing currently held at the Rijksmuseum, presenting us with an enigmatic study in pale hues. Predominantly, the visual field is dominated by the textured interplay of off-whites, where faint forms struggle to emerge from the paper's surface. There is an atmospheric tension between what is present and what remains just beyond perception. Israels' focus here seems less on depiction and more on the process of image-making itself. The 'Abklatsch', or transfer, intentionally destabilizes our expectation of clarity, challenging the conventional reading of figure-ground relationships. The image teeters on the edge of legibility, prompting a re-evaluation of how we perceive and interpret visual information. The understated, almost ethereal quality of the work reveals the artist's engagement with the transient nature of form. It suggests a deeper exploration into the poetics of suggestion. The image invites us to find beauty in the ephemeral, reflecting a broader artistic movement towards abstraction and conceptual thought.
