This undated print by Simon Fokke depicts three historical figures before a naval battle. Note the angels, classical symbols of victory and divine favor, gracing the scene with laurel wreaths. Angels have long served as intermediaries between the divine and the human, their presence a potent signifier of triumph. The laurel wreath, too, echoes through time, from ancient Greece where it crowned victors, to its recurring use in Roman art to glorify emperors and military leaders. One cannot help but observe that the angel on the left, bearing a trumpet, is reminiscent of Fame, a symbol of glory. Consider its appearance on triumphal arches, Renaissance paintings, and even contemporary monuments—each time, its essence shifts, yet the underlying message of victory and divine sanction remains. Such imagery, ingrained in our collective consciousness, stirs deep emotions—a longing for recognition, a fear of oblivion. This enduring symbolism speaks to the cyclical nature of history, and the continuous reinterpretation of our shared cultural memory.
