Editor: This object, "Mirror Frame," dates back to the mid-17th century, crafted by Herman Doomer, its medium appears to be carved wood. The frame has such depth and intricate carvings. What layers of symbolism might we find embedded within? Curator: Absolutely. Beyond its obvious function, consider the mirror's age-old association with self-reflection, both literal and metaphorical. Doomer’s baroque carving, with its intense detail, directs the gaze not just at the reflected image, but also inwards, towards the soul. The dark, perhaps even somber tone of the wood reinforces this introspective quality, doesn't it? What does the geometric order overlaid with organic motifs evoke in you? Editor: It does feel like the tension of bringing order to chaos, but the dark tone almost mutes that, bringing it back to the somber mood you mentioned. It makes me think, are there common visual motifs during this time that evoke "vanitas"? Curator: Precisely. The presence of such intricate, decorative work – bordering on excess, typical of the baroque style - existing alongside that darkness alludes to the transience of earthly beauty and the inevitability of decay, and ultimately, self confrontation with one's mortality. Are these purely decorative flourishes, or whispers of deeper anxieties encoded within the visual language? Editor: It is amazing how something that appears to be decorative art could invite a much deeper read on self reflection! I'll certainly never look at Baroque art the same way again! Curator: And it's through this deeper reading that we honor the cultural memory embedded within. Thank you!
Foliate scrolls inhabited by animals have been pressed into the baleen strips. These motifs are copied from prints after designs by Hans Janssen that were published in Amsterdam around 1625. The artist who carved the moulds has fashionably softened all the elements. Although he did not introduce actual auricular motifs, the influence of the kwab style is nonetheless apparent.
