This drawing of a cartouche was made by H. Picart using an engraving technique. Look closely, and you'll see the qualities of line that define the design. The drawing probably began with preparatory sketches, before transferring the composition onto a metal plate, most likely copper. The lines were then incised using a tool called a burin. The engraver would have needed great skill to achieve a smooth, consistent line, and varying the pressure to create the illusion of depth and shadow. This expertise involved not only technical ability, but also an understanding of period ornament. This cartouche is designed to evoke a sense of grandeur, and power. These elaborate frames were used in architecture and decorative arts to signify the importance of names, and coats of arms. This artwork invites us to think about the labor, skill, and cultural knowledge involved in making, and the hierarchies it represents.
