This group portrait was taken by Eduard Isaac Asser in his garden. It features the Asser family, including Marie Eugène Bour, the Wertheim and Mussche sons-in-law, and a friend of the photographer. Asser, a lawyer and pioneer of photography, moved in Amsterdam’s elite circles. This image offers a glimpse into the domestic life of a prominent Jewish family in the Netherlands during the mid-19th century. The women are seated front and center. Their dresses are of a lighter color which draws the eye, while the men stand behind them, literally and perhaps figuratively. The arrangement speaks to the gender dynamics of the time, even within this progressive family. The photograph is inscribed with a sentimental note in French, reflecting on the enduring nature of the image. It speaks to the desire to preserve memories and relationships, a sentiment that resonates across time and cultures. But we also know that photographs are never neutral records, but are documents which also reveal the biases of the photographer and the sitter.
