Alfred Conteh’s painting "Trish" is a striking composition in blue and red against a solid mustard background. Conteh uses strong colour contrasts to create a visually arresting and emotionally charged image. The figure is rendered in cool blues, overlaid with rivulets of warm, blood-like red. This stark opposition creates a powerful sense of unease, drawing our attention to the materiality of the paint itself. The dripping, linear quality of the red paint contrasts with the smooth, almost porcelain-like finish of the blue skin beneath. This interplay between texture and colour adds layers of complexity to the painting. Conteh challenges traditional representations of portraiture, destabilising conventional associations between colour and emotion. By presenting his subject in such a visceral, unconventional manner, he invites us to question our assumptions about identity, representation, and the power of visual language. The painting invites ongoing interpretation and re-interpretation.
