Curatorial notes
This is a photograph by David Vermeulen of his family's children near boats along the quay in Königswinter. Vermeulen’s photograph captures a seemingly ordinary family moment, yet it subtly reflects the social and cultural values of its time. Looking at the children, their clothing suggests a certain social standing, hinting at the intersection of class and childhood innocence. The image, while appearing simple, operates within a network of societal expectations and gendered roles, as young girls are dressed in skirts and hats, embodying a particular vision of childhood decorum. David Vermeulen offers us a snapshot of his children at play. A tender moment, set against the backdrop of leisure and affluence. It invites us to reflect on the intricate ways in which personal narratives are always entwined with broader social landscapes.
