Naum Gabo made 'Head No. 2' using metal to construct this woman's head, and, in a way, to deconstruct it! I can imagine Gabo, puzzling through how to remake a head using industrial materials and geometric forms. He's got this limited palette and a reductive approach, yet it feels so emotionally resonant. The sculpture’s planes shift with the light, suggesting a dynamic, ever-changing presence. I see the planes as a method of re-construction - what new shapes and forms will become the head? It's like Cubism but in three dimensions, right? Gabo was part of a generation rethinking how we see and represent the world; he’s in conversation with Picasso, Braque, and other avant-garde artists who were exploring abstraction and new modes of perception. I love to think about all these artists working at the same time, riffing on one another, pushing the boundaries of representation. Artists like Gabo invite us to see the world not as fixed and solid, but as fluid, multifaceted, and full of possibilities.
