This is 'Head of a Man' by Picasso and looks like it might have been made with oil paint on canvas. It's all ruddy oranges and browns with thick black outlines that contain the shape of the head. I can imagine him making this. What do you think he was thinking about when he was putting these colors down? It feels like a raw sketch, capturing a fleeting thought or emotion. The paint is brushed on so you can see the marks, giving it a real physical presence. I’m drawn to that big swooping line for the eye, which is so bold and confident. It reminds me of other artists who were also trying to break down form and find new ways of seeing. Ultimately, this painting is about the messy, imperfect process of trying to capture the essence of a person, isn't it? It’s like he's inviting us to join in the search for new ways of seeing and understanding each other.
