This engraving of "Christus" was created by Antoine Masson, a 17th-century French artist, working in a period defined by religious conflict and courtly opulence. Here, the figure of Christ is presented with a gentle gaze and open hands, bearing the marks of his crucifixion. Yet, his serene expression avoids any sense of agony. Masson situates Christ as a figure of forgiveness, rather than of suffering. The historical context of religious art in the 17th century often saw depictions of religious figures as symbols of power. In contrast, Masson's representation invokes a more personal, intimate connection with the divine. He invites the viewer to confront the historical and personal implications of faith, challenging us to consider the power of grace and the complex relationship between suffering and redemption.
