This postcard was sent to Willem Bogtman in 1922 by Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst. It’s not a painting, but I see it as an art object. I’m drawn to the handwritten text filling the card, lines and curves dancing across the surface. The ink varies, from thick to thin, creating its own topography. Look at the ‘R’ in the centre, twice over, how the ink pools at the apex of the curve, catching the light, like a deliberate mark in a painting. It's like Holst is thinking aloud, each word a brushstroke in a stream of consciousness. The stamp and postmark add layers, grounding it in a specific time and place. It reminds me of Cy Twombly's scrawled surfaces or the way Basquiat integrated text into his paintings. Art is about more than just the image, it's about the process, the story, and the conversation between artists across time.
