Rodrigo Franzao’s ‘Organelle 2’ is a patchwork of brightly colored fabrics sewn together, like a quilt that has come alive. Imagine Franzao snipping, layering, and stitching with the focused energy of a jazz musician improvising on a theme. I think he’s riffing on the modernist grid, you know? Giving it a warm, hand-made twist with those cozy, tactile textiles. I can almost feel the fabric between my fingers, see him arranging and rearranging those squares and stripes. I’m thinking of the Pattern and Decoration movement that broke out of Minimalism in the '70s and '80s. Franzao uses bold hues—reds, purples, greens—in a way that’s both playful and considered. And it’s not just about color, those dangling threads, like errant brushstrokes, refusing to be contained, disrupting the neatness of the grid. This piece feels like a conversation with all those artists, past and present, who have grappled with form and feeling. It’s about embracing the messy, the imperfect, the beautifully unresolved.
