This untitled piece by Rodrigo Franzao is made up of colourful squares of hanging fabric, like a patchwork quilt that got up and left the bed. I imagine Franzao, standing in the studio, snipping and sewing, thinking of colours and textures, seeing how they play together. The yellows, oranges, and greens, a symphony of bright hues that vibrate and resonate, like a garden in full bloom. The fabric gathers and drapes, bunches and wrinkles and catches the light, creating depth. These aren’t brushstrokes, but each fold, each seam, becomes a gesture, a mark of his hand and a record of the decisions made. It’s as if Franzao is in conversation with the work of Sheila Hicks or the colourful collages of Matisse, an artist who kept exploring and pushing the boundaries of what painting could be. Like them, he reminds us that art is always in motion, always changing, always open to new possibilities.
