This piece, "All We Imagine as Light. The City from Where No News Can Come", is by Nalini Malani, and it's like a visual diary, layered with personal and historical moments. Malani's approach to layering text and images reminds me of my own painting process, where I build up surfaces, letting different layers peek through. Look at the way the colours interact, the muted tones creating a sense of memory and history. You can almost feel the artist's hand at work. The texture in this piece is really interesting. The overlaid text and different images creates a sense of density and depth. Notice the central image of the figures being carried, how this area has a different, softer feel than the busyness surrounding it. The layering creates a kind of emotional weight. Like a conversation across time. It makes me think of other artists who grapple with memory and history in their work, like Gerhard Richter, but with a distinctly personal and poetic voice. Malani reminds us that art is about embracing ambiguity, and acknowledging that there's always more than one way to see things.
