This letter to Jan Veth was made at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, probably with pen and paper. Look at how the text shifts and tilts across the page, like a tide coming in. I can almost see the hand moving, thinking, pausing, then diving back in. The lines seem to have a mind of their own, don't they? I wonder what the author was feeling as they poured their thoughts onto the page. Maybe a mix of excitement and nerves, trying to find the right words to express themselves. Each stroke of the pen, the loops and dashes, it’s all so physical. You can sense the energy of the moment, the artist wrestling with ideas and emotions. It reminds me that we artists are all in this big, messy conversation, across time, inspiring and challenging each other. And painting, or in this case, writing, isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about the questions, the doubts, the journey.
