Curatorial notes
Jozef Israëls made this drawing, titled "Landschap", using chalk on paper. Chalk is an interesting material; it's so basic, really just compressed sediment, but it’s also capable of capturing such nuance. In this piece, Israëls layers delicate strokes to evoke a hazy landscape. See how the soft, almost powdery texture of the chalk creates a sense of atmosphere and distance. The marks are faint. He must have used delicate pressure, coaxing the material into a scene. Israëls was known for his sympathetic portrayals of working-class life, and even in this landscape, you can sense a connection to the land and the labor it sustains. It’s a reminder that even the simplest materials, like chalk, can be imbued with profound social and cultural significance through the artist’s touch and vision. It certainly asks us to think again about the division of art and craft.
