Curatorial notes

This photograph of a woman in a full dress, seated at a table, was created by Heinrich Lowenstein in the Netherlands. While the exact date of the piece is unknown, the photograph gives us insight into the culture of the 19th century. Looking at the scene, one is immediately aware of the trappings of wealth: the furniture, the heavy fabric of the dress, the lace shawl. All are markers of the sitter's place in the economic hierarchy of the time. The way she has been posed suggests the sitter had a certain status in the community. A historian might want to research fashion trends or photography of the period, examining popular magazines or other portrait studios in the area. The meaning of this piece is shaped by the social and institutional circumstances in which it was made.
