Curator: Immediately I’m struck by the almost oppressive feeling of that densely packed library, those countless bound pages. It really sets a mood. Editor: Indeed. We’re looking at "Doctor Syntax met een vrouw in een bibliotheek" by Thomas Rowlandson, dating to around 1820. It's currently housed in the Rijksmuseum. What we see rendered is pen, ink and watercolor. Curator: The architectural detail almost overwhelms the figures. Do you get a sense of a burgeoning knowledge culture there? The woman’s “blue stocking” indicates intellectual aspirations. She represents that cultural movement of women seeking knowledge in this period. Editor: Absolutely, the imagery and meaning jump right out, yet I keep coming back to the textures. The roughness of the paper, how the watercolor pools in the linework created by pen. I would love to understand more about the manufacture of those early 19th-century papers and inks. Curator: Observe, too, how Syntax presents the book to her—not so much an offering, as a… challenge. It highlights a transition to broader access to books beyond male scholarship. Editor: And the artist clearly put so much labour into constructing the details, each shelf overflowing, emphasizing production and value placed on information and preservation of historical works. Do you see a parallel there? Curator: Without a doubt, that’s a fantastic connection. He may be subtly noting anxieties regarding the role of knowledge and women, though with some admiration I’d wager! Look at the bust above them, almost a silent observer on this dynamic. It gives the whole image a certain grandeur. Editor: Yes, grand in its conception and what that must have taken in planning and production! Thanks, now I will never see it the same. Curator: Well, I’m equally thankful for the fresh material perspective on the deeper imagery within this drawing.
