Curatorial notes
This is Antonio Beato's photograph of the Zuilengalerij in the temple of Seti I, Abydos, taken some time in the second half of the 19th century. The photograph presents a symmetrical composition of towering columns receding into the distance, guiding the eye towards a bright opening, suggestive of infinite space. The texture of the stone is palpable, with visible hieroglyphs adding a layer of visual complexity. Beato masterfully employs light and shadow to create depth. The rhythmic repetition of the columns and their shadows introduces a structured pattern, which is disrupted only by the figure standing in the foreground, providing scale and a sense of human presence amidst monumental architecture. The photograph engages with themes of perspective and representation, creating a structured and measured view of an ancient world. The formal qualities of symmetry and texture, combined with the cultural context of Egyptian antiquity, invite viewers to consider questions of time, history and representation.
