This photograph of temple ruins, likely taken in the 1860s or 70s by Félix Bonfils, shows the Proanos temple in exquisite detail. Bonfils was a master of the collodion process, a photographic technique that required coating a glass plate with light-sensitive chemicals. The resulting print captures not only the architectural grandeur of the temple, but also the effects of time and decay on the stone. Look at the intricate carvings on the capitals of the columns, still visible despite the ruinous state. The rough texture of the stone, the weight of the massive blocks, and the play of light and shadow all speak to the skill of the original builders, as well as the labor and resources required to construct such a monumental structure. This photograph reminds us that every artwork, whether ancient or modern, is the result of a complex interplay of materials, processes, and human effort. It encourages us to appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship that goes into creating objects that can withstand the test of time, both physically and culturally.
