C. Maufsaise’s photograph captures the interior of the Sala de Dos Hermanas in the Alhambra, Spain, with a focus on pattern and light. The surface of this photograph feels almost velvety, a consequence of the monochrome tones. The image is full of pattern, each shape and mark contributing to a layered experience of visual information. It's an image that reminds us how much art is about process, about layering, and about finding unexpected relationships between forms. Look at the arches and the geometric shapes. These forms appear to float in and out of focus. I am reminded of the work of Agnes Martin. However, where Martin’s work uses very subtle lines and colors to explore ideas about inner space, Maufraise's photograph uses architecture. Like all art, this photograph suggests that meaning isn't fixed. It’s something that emerges from the act of seeing and feeling.
